The alligator first appeared on earth about 37 million years ago. It’s a living breathing dinosaur in modern day times. Unlike their more widespread counterpart, the crocodile, the alligator can only be found in America, Mexico, and China. Their name comes from Spanish explorers who first saw the alligator on an expedition to Florida. They called it el lagarto(the lizard) which was later anglicized to alligator.
No average lifespan for alligators has ever been measured. Scientists have no idea how old these amazing creatures can get. The oldest one recorded lived to be 84. They’re fierce predators who hide out in the wetlands posing as a log, waiting for their prey to pass by close enough to ambush them. Their jaws are incredibly strong and they feed by death rolling to rip pieces off of their prey into more manageable bites. As a rule, they’re timid of humans and are more likely to leave than to attack when they see one. But attacks on people are not unheard of. Its a powerful reminder that humans are not the top of the food chain.
