Vajra & Ghanta Earrings

In Tibetan tradition, the left hand holds the bell, the right the vajra: wisdom and strength, not opposed but completing each other. We translated this pairing into earrings, the ghanta with its suspended clapper and beaded handle, the vajra with its five prongs and central orb. Both forms are drawn from Ming dynasty Xuande-period bronzes in the National Museum of China: the ghanta's body carries jeweled garland patterns, its stem ascending through lotus and makara mouth; the vajra centers on a pearl flanked by lotus platforms, prongs extending in five directions. Worn together, they create intentional asymmetry, the bell's mobility against the vajra's fixed geometry, sound against silence, movement against stillness. The natural finish is bright and direct; the oxidized version carries the weight of age.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

Most earrings mirror each other. These complete each other. The ghanta moves slightly when you turn your head; the vajra stays constant. The contrast is the point, not matching, but balancing. The detailing holds up to close inspection: the makara mouths, the lotus platforms, the beaded garlands are all present at wearable scale. For those familiar with the symbolism, it is a discreet expression of practice; for others, simply an unusual, well-made asymmetrical pair with genuine historical reference.

HAND-FINISHED

Each piece is cast and finished to preserve the proportional relationships of the original Xuande bronzes. The ghanta clapper is calibrated for subtle movement without audible chime, present, not distracting. The vajra's five prongs are balanced for symmetrical visual weight around the central orb. Surface treatment follows the original artifact's patina logic in the oxidized version, or its original luster in the natural finish.

Wipe gently with a soft cloth. Avoid water and chemicals. The ghanta clapper should be kept free of debris to maintain subtle movement. Store as a pair to preserve the intended wearing relationship.
